Maths

What is our Maths vision?

At the heart of our Maths curriculum is the belief that all children can achieve. Our vision is built on an exciting growth mindset and problem-solving approach.

How do we teach Maths?

Mastery Maths is our approach and PowerMaths is the main tool we use for resources and to support teacher workload.

Mastery Maths is an educational approach focused on ensuring students achieve a deep, thorough understanding of mathematical concepts before moving on to more advanced topics.

Mastery Maths - BIG 5

The key principles of Mastery Maths include:

Deep Understanding: Emphasis is on grasping the 'why' and 'how' behind mathematical concepts, not just rote memorisation or procedural proficiency.

Fluency: Developing quick and accurate recall of mathematical facts and procedures, ensuring students can apply them effortlessly.

Mathematical Thinking: Encourages reasoning, problem-solving, and the ability to think mathematically about new problems and concepts.

Use of Concrete, Pictorial, and Abstract (CPA) representations: Use of concrete objects and manipulatives, pictorial representations (such as drawings), and abstract symbols to help students understand and internalize mathematical concepts.

Small Steps and Practice: Breaking down learning into small, manageable steps, providing plenty of practice and consolidation before moving on.

High Expectations for All: We believe all students are capable of achieving high standards in mathematics with appropriate teaching and support.

Assessment for Learning: Utilising formative assessments to inform instruction and provide feedback to students, ensuring they have mastered each step before progressing.

This approach aims to build a solid foundation in mathematics, reducing gaps in knowledge and fostering long-term retention and the ability to apply maths skills in different contexts.
